Maersk and IBM announce blockchain joint venture
Maersk and IBM are to set up a joint venture to provide more efficient and secure methods for conducting global trade using blockchain technology. Maersk expects to launch the first two elements of the project- a shipping information pipeline offering end-to-end supply chain visibility and a paperless trade system that will digitise and automate paperwork filings. The platform has been piloted by bodies including Port Houston, Rotterdam Port Community System Portbase, the Customs Administration of the Netherlands and US Customs and Border Protection.

PSA Singapore signs 21-year solar energy agreement at Pasir Panjang Terminal
PSA signed a21-year solar power purchase agreement with Sunseap Group. Sunseap will construct and install a 4 MW peal solar system that will serve five sites at PSA’s Pasir Panjan Terminal. In order to cut greenhouse gas emissions, Singapore has been urging local businesses to consider clean energy options. Singapore intends to implement a carbon tax from 2019, applicable to the country’s largest emitters such as power stations.

India expands Sri Lanka port investment
The Export-Import Bank of India has approved USD 45.27 million in credit for the construction of Sri Lanka’s Kankesanthrai port, which was destroyed by the December 2004 tsunami and Cyclone Nisha in 2008. The financial deal complements India’s interest in jointly developing the Tricomalee Port project, a deepwater site located about 550 km from Colombo.
Those moves come as Chinese companies have gained considerable logistics space in the Indian Ocean region with Hambantota Port project, near Colombo, and they continue to ramp-up investment under the Belt and Road programme.

Vessel operators push fuel ban scheme ahead of IMO meeting
At the end of 2017, BIMCO, the Cruise Lines International Association, International Chamber of Shipping, International Parcel tankers’ Association, Intertanko and the World Shipping Council submitted a proposal advocating a ban on the carriage of high-sulphur fuel oil as bunkers on board vessels without scrubbers to the IMO for discussion next month. Environmental groups have joined the international shipping organisations in calling for the ban.

Cosco Shipping Ports agrees concession deal with Zeebrugge
Cosco Shipping Ports has entered an agreement with the Port of Zeebrugge to operate the Zeebrugge Terminal in Belgium. The move comes after the port operator purchased 76% stake in the terminal from APM Terminal. Cosco Shipping Ports also signed a memorandum of understanding with CMA CGM, which intends to purchase an initial 10% stake in the terminal.
